Now not only are they forcing you to download the app, they are forcing you to turn on notifications!! And not just the badge app, you have to turn on banners or alerts!! If you turn them off, you get an extremely annoying popup EVERY TIME you open the app!!! Wtf is their problem???

Forcing? I don't have messenger installed on my phone and Facebook isn't forcing me to do any of this... yet.

Oh ya, they will soon. I made the mistake of downloading it and now I can't go back.

I haven't downloaded the Messenger app, but my wife has. It was such a battery hog, she uninstalled it. She now uses the mobile Safari web page to send messages.

Personally, I don't send enough messages for it to be worth it. I too, grow tired of Facebook forcing users to do what THEY think is best.

Your post will keep me from installing this garbage app.

Funny. I was just going to post a thread about this. Glad you did. I'm going to be doing what one of the posters mentioned above. Make a Webpage on Homepage and just use that. I'm not wasting my time with Messenger.

I used to to use Messages in the Facebook app, but once they forced me to download the new second messages app I just deleted both. I'm not wasting the icon and memory space on a pointless app.

they say that like 200 million people use the new app every month, and while most of us are like "Wowwww I guess everybody does like it!" I'm betting that number is much, much less than what the previous numbers were, considering in the last quarter alone they had over 1 and a quarter BILLION active users a month. 200 mil is pretty paltry in that light.

same thing with dumb Foursquare moving to forcing two apps and losing the badges.

I set my notifications whichever way I like them for the Messenger app and they seem to work fine. I've seen the pop up maybe once or twice but that's it.

I don't use the messenger app that much so when the time comes that I'm forced to switch over, I might just forego it. Either that or I get so few messages the whole notification thing won't bother me, I suppose.
