Why does ios 5 install ...BACKUP a backed up ipad ?

I transfered purchases, synced and backed up
before attempting to update to ios 5 ...

Then 1st thing ios 5 does is a backup and its taking forever!

Seems to be some other type of backup, how long does it take?
