I can't for the life of me figure out why I sometimes find that mail.app is running and fetches email when both my universal and email account is set for manual. Anyone else have this issue. I hate the mail app and only wish to use safari for my mail (gmail).

I have this problem too, but its usually only at nighttime. My mail will only fetch for one of my email accounts when I ask it to during the day, however at night, while my phone is on my clock radio cradle, it will fetch automatically and I'll wake up to mail on my phone in the morning, making it so I have to double delete all my emails (from phone AND computer).
I dont know if something resets overnight or what and sorry I dont have an answer either, but I wanted to chime in and let you know you're not the only one.

Mine gets mail sometimes too!!! I thought I was touching mail button somehow.

If the phone is set to fetch manually, then is there a difference if push is set to on or off? I thought the push would only drain battery if it was scheduled to fetch.

You should use IMAP email as opposed to POP email, it syncs everything so you don't have to double delete.

More to topic, my mail doesn't do what you say. However, I've noticed that when I run Contacts, I will sometimes get new mail.
