Why does my BRAND NEW MacBook only have 38gb LEFT???

My moms brand new MacBook is telling me there is only 38gb left. What is the deal with this?? It's a 60gb harddrive, and we have put nothing on it except for the software updates. I know it well never be the full capacity, but 22gb...cmon.

Anyone have an explanation?

Download Monolingual or Delocalizer to get back 1 Gb

Unfortunately that's how it goes...
HD manufacturers advertise drives assuming that 1KB = 1000 bytes. In actuality, 1KB = 1024 bytes, 1MB = 1024KB, 1GB = 1024MB...
So right from the start you lose about 7% of the advertised capacity.

Add into that the space taken by the OS, redundant printer drivers you'll never use, support for languages you can't read, 100s of GarageBand loops, iDVD themes, iWeb templates, those new Jingles for GarageBand... It adds up.

To me, it'd be worth a quick reinstall so that the extra languages and printer drivers aren't included from the start... That may be something to consider.

I agree. WAY too many pre-loaded software from Apple. But, they are trying to be the leading computer producer and with my opinion, bravo. Still, they should make it to where it asks you which you want to be installed, though that will defeat the purpose of "out of the box" for the MacBooks. Call Apple. Maybe they'd tell you.

Wow....I just deleted iWork cuz I'm using Neooffice, and I just scored five GB.

If you don't want iWork then get rid of the demo as that takes nearly 2GB.

Cause Apple advertises out-of-the-box compatibility and usability, and not preinstalling the iApps and drivers will result in more complaints and support calls wasting everyone's time.

I dont see why the option cant be there when you turn on your mac. When it asks for your details it could say Do you want.. blah blah blah... If you say No it would automatically delete them from your system (as they are pre-installed anyway) and this gives the consumer the choice.

Would save having to do a complete re-install in order to get rid of unecessery printer drivers and languages.

I second this. It's definately worth doing a quick reinstall.

Whenever I buy a new Mac thats the first thing I do. A complete reinstall. IMO it's the most efficient, safest way of clearing out your new hdd.

I don't really see the benefit of asking. It's just a drag and drop away for those who know what they want and what they don't want, and those that are new to the Mac will have to explore and find out if they want it anyway. They're not ready to answer yes or no.

I hate unnecessary UI prompts.
