Why does my Mac asks me to log in twice?

I got a MBP 2015 and some times when I enter my login credentials, the progress bar for the loading of Yosemite gets to about half then I get a black screen with apple logo and then I have to enter my credentials again. This second login screen is different as the blurred background pic is not my chosen desktop pic but the standard yosemite desktop pic. I also noted the keyboard is set to US and not UK (I have the UK model), it's like my personal settings are not loaded. After login everything works correctly.

I read somewhere the double login is because of FileVault but in my case it happens randomly, not all the time. Any clue?

It sounds like your mbp is crashing after you enter your creds and then rebooting into safemode or something of the sort.

turn off filevault and it will go away

I concur, sounds like a boot-time crash. Open up Console.app (in Utilities), go to the "All Messages" view. Scroll to the time when the last event occurred. Log messages often give clues as to what's gone wrong.

Best advice I can give you is the following: Turn FileVault off then on again.

had the same problem... went away after turning off filevault... Ill try it again with El capital...

EDIT: so far it works great... it asks me for password and then it boots up system... no double login... I will keep an eye on it

Did OP set a password UEIF (aka "BIOS")?

In the case of FileVault, maybe turn it off, then reeanble it? That might clear up FileVault issues.

MacBookPro5,2 here, with a preference for Mavericks.

For me, a start of Yosemite after Mavericks always involves two starts. Two chimes, each one followed by an unlock of the Core Storage logical volume.

The automated restart occurs very soon after the first attempt to start. So soon, apparently, that's it's not logged to the HFS Plus startup volume.

I'm not bothered, just observing the behaviour. Now, back to Mavericks …

ok found out what's happening first time I was having this problem I had filevault setup to icloud password... once i set it up to the recovery key it's working just fine... no double booting... everytime i turn My computer on i hear the chime it shows me all the users... I put in the password and then it boots the system... much better than having the icloud taking care of filevault... which is also pretty bad when you will need to recover your password without Internet connection

Was it always intended to allow start of the Mac by all those users?

Before things became fine: did a simple press on the power key sometimes present just one user, and did the unexpected restart and chime occur after entering the password for that sole user?

before when I was using the iCloud option it was like OP described or it just booted up and didnt even ask me for the iCloud password at all after chime it booted up and went straight to the login screen where I put the user password... now it makes more sense when it asks me about user password before even booting the system... and there are no problems with half booting as stated before

If that screen defaulted to just one user for a system that could normally be started by multiple users: it's not what I'd expect from a FileVault 2-protected system.

Was what you describe a simple start of the Mac (from a shut down state)?

Or might it have been within an automated restart routine involving installation of software that required a restart?

I have both the same machine, and problem. Try selection "Macintosh HD" in the "Startup Disk" section of the system preferences. It worked for me
