why does safari not have the home button by default? I'm just curious, since I would have thought that this would be a popular button for users, and since it is gone from the default setup, I'm sure there are people who wonder where it is, and aren't tech-savvy enough to add it themselves.

nor does Camino have it on by default.

i dont know, i never saw the point of it either. my homepage is left blank anyways so its not like i would ever use it personally.

The only reason I have a home button is because I can middle click on it to get a new tab.

Yes, I know that. That's why I talked about what newbies would do if they didn't know how to get to their homepage.

Also, I'm a Mac user since June, 2005. I am a bit surprised that http://www.apple.com/startpage/ is Safari's homepage and not something less... biased? Like http://www.google.com/ , something that would actually be useful to Mac newbies.

We're talking about newbies, as in your grandmother, not someone who subscribes to RSS feeds and posts on forums.

Biased? and Google is a free site? LOL

Safari is already biased, then, in using Google as its default search engine. What use do most consumers have, using http://www.apple.com/startpage/ as their homepage? There isn't even a search engine on it, whereas for IE, at least MSN.com has a search engine.

There is no need for Safari to take you directly to a search page, as there is a SEARCH built directly into the browser. Seems redundant to bring you to google, when there is a google search in the browser.

If you don't like Apples home page, change your default page. It is not like Safari is the first to do this, as Microsoft's IE took you to the same place in OS9!

I dunno. I think it's dumb to leave it out by default.
Thanks for the agreement.

Also, even though I agree that it would be redundant to have a search page as the homepage, AND the search bar, I still then think that the homepage should have less content than the current one. Oh well, I was just voicing my opinion and hearing to what others have to say.

The start page used to be a co-branded version of the Excite portal, and then a co-branded version of the Netscape portal. I guess the deal just got too expensive.

As for the home page button...I don't see it as an especially useful thing; it's just like a bookmark button except with a different icon. The bookmarks bar is visible by default, and its easier to set a page as a bookmark--just drag the favicon to the bar.

On my Windows machine I use the home button. My home page is Google.
On my Macs, the search is built in. I never would use the home button on Safari. My opinion.

How often do people even need to go back to their homepage?

I use the home button quite regularly - I have the BBC News site as my homepage, so when I want to check what is going on I just hit 'Home'. It is no different really than any of the bookmarks I have in the bookmarks bar, so I would guess that it is kind of redundant from that point of view, but I am so used to it being there, that it would be strange if it wasn't.

Maybe it's because I'm coming from a Windows background but I like having the home button.
