Of note is the fact the X has a whopping 1,000,000:1 ratio.

I'd expect the 8/8+ to be the same, or at least expect the plus to be the better of the two?
 
I have been wondering this since quite some time so I’m also interested to know if there is a technical answer to this question.

Actually I noticed this back in 2014 when they released the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Since then, the regular iPhone always had a slightly better contrast ratio than the Plus variant.
 
They're completely different displays. The Plus model has a much higher pixel density than the smaller screen. It's like comparing pineapples to papaya.
