iPad Pro Why does the Lightning adapter to HDMI not Output full screen ?

I just returned the Lighting adapter to HDMI dongle to Apple. I had 6 great movies in iPad Form Iwantedto watch on my OLED HDR 55" TV and while the movies looked great and filled the screen. Apps and the iOS display would not go full screen. I found this quite odd,maybe it a setting I missed in iOS ? It seems like for $50.00 this needs to be solved. I understand why because it drives sales of Apple TVs.

It has got nothing to do with Apple TV. Apple couldn't care less about the numbers on the Apple TV to be honest. It's just a thing they've kept around like the iPods.

When not playing movies it mirrors the iPad screen to the TV, i.e. it keeps the same aspect ratio as the iPad screen. That's not the same aspect ratio as the TV, so it doesn't fill the screen. Movies will fill the screen because they are generally the same aspect ratio as your TV: if you played a 4:3 aspect ratio movie through the adapter it wouldn't fill the screen either.

The iPad screen is not 4:3 or 16:9 like the TV/monitor, thus there are black bars around what's being shown to avoid stretching it and making it look worse. The Apple TV does the same too but has the option of reducing the bars away for a slightly bigger out of the iPad screen. In return, the latency will be higher and this is also dependent on your Wifi network, making this option less reliable than the adapter

And no, I have tested both the adapter and the Apple TV and can safely say this is nothing to do with driving up Apple TV sales. In fact, if they really want to do that, the adapter won't exist in the first place and the Apple TV would have been marketed as the only way to mirror your iPad screen to other TV/monitor
