Why doesn't Amazon directly sell a iPad or iPhone ?

Apple does discount device to places like Best Buy. It allows them to sell with a discount to move stock.
Are you sure about this?!
A store might take a bit of hit to move older hardware even though they’re making a small loss. I never heard Apple providing discounts.
I am betting they are selling Best Buy at a lower cost. No way they could discount items $100+ and not be getting a "special deal" from Apple.
As already mentioned, margin on Apple products is narrow and fixed. Most stores make money on the finance offered to customers buying Apple products - not to mention overpriced third party cables and cases.
Wow, you guys really don't follow the news let alone public statements from Amazon do you. It's because Amazon has it's own competing products to sell. Amazon has been taking a stance for a few years now about selling products it competes with directly. This was even in the news recently regarding Nest products.
Probably for the same reason that Apple stores do not sell Kindles.
I don’t think amazon follows that business model. There are other competing devices available on Amazon.

Well you're wrong. Amazon has specifically stated such and has been very public about it. Won't sell Google Chromecast, Home, or Nest products. Because of their own competing products in the same market such as FireTV, Echo, and Ecobee. Kindle HD competes with iPad, Apple TV competes with Prime video and FireTV. They just recently after many years of denying sell of AppleTV have started stocking it and also worked a deal to allow Prime Video app on AppleTV.

Amazon does not stop the sell of vendor marketplaces from selling these products. They just won't be sold directly from Amazon. There are a lot of products that fall into this same category that Amazon refuses to sell. Including Sonos speakers, but they'll sell the Sonos One because it has Alexa built in. None of the other Sonos products will be sold from Amazon.

The second one is on prime - fulfilled by amazon - but yeah third party seller as well. Missed that completely. This makes sense.
In India, Amazon owned subsidiaries are together the second biggest sellers of iPhones after Flipkart owned subsidiaries.
Owned subsidiaries is a legal loophole that a person who isn’t from India won’t understand.
But it’s effectively a way FK and Amazon sell stuff in India. And no, I’m not talking of third party suppliers.
In India, both Amazon and Flipkart owned subsidiaries like Cloudtail India, etc, sell iPhones, iPads and MacBooks too.
And they sell way more iPhones than are sold at Indian Apple Premium Resellers and Authorised Stores.
