why doesn't Apple offer OS X USB thumb drive upgrades any more?

5.16 GB download.... 9 hours to go....

Those of us who live at the end of a tiny pipeline way out in the country are not well served by the online download only these days.

At least I have (very slow) DSL now... these type of downloads would have killed my monthly 20GB limit if I was still on Hughes satellite internet, which used to be the only broadband available out here.

$$ is probably why. Sending out millions of these do cost Apple Money, and they know how easy it is for us lay people to buy our own.

It's actually pretty easy to create your own...and cheaper.

Get a USB 3 flash drive.

He'd still have to download it first, which is the problem

You could always go to a coffee shop, Library (both of those could be slow) or an Apple store and download it there.

All the tutorials which i saw here in this forum to create a bootable usb drive with some OS X on it is to save time of downloading it from apple's servers?

No. You have to download it to put it on the thumb drive. Putting it on a thumb drive is useful if you want to do a clean install or do multiple computers.

This has been the case for three years now. If you can go use someone else's WiFi (starbucks/Apple Store), I'd do that. They generally have a better connection than domestic broadband.
