Why doesn't iOS support favicons?

I'm not referring to the homescreen icon of a webpage, but the icons that appear next to bookmarks in iOS Safari's Bookmarks menu.

Why go to the trouble of adding bookmark icons next to the bookmarks but not have it display favicons?

Favicons are subjective and some people like them. But they can also be rather messy.

That said, it is worth noting that Reading List uses Favicons.
