when trying to watch streaming video using VPC? Before you ask why I don't just watch under WMP OSX, it won't even load the stream running it under OSX. This is the kind of s*** that drives me crazy! I love the mac platform in every aspect aside from the internet, which is huge in my book. I hate comming across a site that only works for windows IE 6.0 or better or only works with windows media player 9.1. I need to be able to go anywhere, anytime, with any machine. This monopoly sucks! I have to go and by windows machine because we don't have ACT 6.0, and my office uses a site that requires IE 5.5 or better. I hate to have to buy a windows machine because I prefer a Mac soooooooooooo much more, but I guess I have to....it's just not right.

I have another WMP question. I have a .wmv file that plays only the audio - no video - when it opens in WMP. What's up with that?

Thats Win Media 9 series video, mac media player (from MS) doesn't support it, and according to BillG never will...sad I know.

Secondly, are you using safari? if you are, when you get to a site that contains win media content, safari will usually open up the media and send the file to the winmedia player, and play outside of the browser. You also should try Mplayer for OS X, it has reverse engineered the WinMedia (up to series 8) and runs smoother and faster than MS WinMedia player for OS X (plays DiVX perfectly too)..though it does have some compatibility problems to be worked out, apparently the developers are trying to work it into a QT codec...that would rock, but still, without winmedia 9 series support, its gonna be rough.

If you think its bad here, you should visit Korean web sites...My god. 80% of them only work in IE windows and MS MediaPlayer....at least here we got some choice like Real One or QT most of the time.

You should read this for a little chuckle...from 1995 Steve Jobs Interview

And as for ACT 6.0...sounds like a perfect opporunity for a Mac Developer... Yo! Omnigroup, you there??

Is there any way to convert the wmv file to another format so I can check out the video?

If you Mean WinMedia 9, no way. Even MS doesnt make a decoder for thier own formats, unlike Quicktime where you can "Export" file you've downloaded. The WinMedia 9 series video codec is totaly closed...that is until FFMPEG/Mencoder cracks it...hopefully they can. You can use Mencoder or FFMPEG to transcode the videos from WMP8 and earlier, but there may be some incompatiblities, especially with streaming.

As a note, Real PC is gonna be coming out soon (hopefully) and should supposedly be supporting full hardware (graphics card etc) acceleration and provide much better emulation than Virtual PC (which MS most definitely will let die slow and painfully)...I know how you feel though, I bought my g4 cube just to get away from MS, only to have to use VPC and Office/IE!!!

Why doesn't windows media player work smoothly...

because Microsoft made it....

Don't expect stability, intuity, or smoothness from microsoft.

I have trouble trying to figure out how semi-small companies like Mozdev can create MUCH better products than a multibillion dollar conglomerate like Microsoft.
