I've noticed a little pattern going on. Every couple of days I open the app store and go to the update tab, and update the applications that have updates. My question is, Why do I have to do this. Can't the things freakin do it themselves. Even more so, Why do I have to input a password to update them?

That is all.

In order to have 10,000 apps auto-update you would have a severe constraint of bandwidth with all those billions of apps constantly sending data to see if there is an update.

I'm pretty sure you have to enter your password to prevent people from logging into their iTunes account on their friend's phone and downloading apps -- which you can do but unless they give you their password, you can't update them (and you can't sync them back to the computer)

The download process is also set up to handle apps with paid updates, which hasn't been utilised just yet, but this will start rolling out in the coming months.
