Why don't I ever get an automatic capital letter at the start of sentences?

As above. Mac OS 12.6, 14'' MBP.
I have the correct settings on in the keyboard preferences. I have turned them off, re booted, back on etc. Nothing works. Auto spell correction doesn't work either, although I do get an indication I've spelt something wrong.
Is this a bug in the latest OS, just how things are or just me?

You have to press shift or use caps lock.

It should capitalize automatically if you have the right setting enabled, although I believe this works only on text fields made using appropriate OS-specific APIs. Have you tried the Notes app or Messages?

Ah right. Yes, Notes and Messages (Apples) work ok, but that's about it.

What's the point of auto then?

I thought auto would do that automatically like it does on my iPhone and iPad.
