Seems silly to me that in 2020, they HAVE to be on their stand. I think it would be game changing if you could mount them .. at least the 27".

Ehmm you can. You just have to get an iMac with the VESA mount from purchase - it's either the stand, or VESA. And you can't change it afterwards either!

Yeah when I saw this thread I was wondering if they had just removed this option from the 2020 models, because I had definitely seen VESA options on Apple’s website before

I knew you could, but I definitely wasn't aware you needed to do it at time of purchase? that's a bit of a pain I was hoping to eventually get a mount for my Vari Desk.

The iMac Pro could (flimsily) be swapped between stand and VESA mount, though as my parenthesis may have implied, it wasn't something you'd want to do several times. The screws and all that were... Clearly not meant for several changes.
For the regular iMac you either get the stand or the mount, no swaps

Yep, I have 3 "thicc" iMacs that I bought the VESA Apple mount after the fact and 2 thinner models that had to be custom order VESA, which I was ordering custom build on those anyway but still, if you wanted to pick one up from the store with VESA capability it isn't happening.
Cept the iMac Pro.

The iMac Pro does not have this requirement, FYI.

What do you mean by "no mention of this on their site when ordering"?

1) www.apple.com
2) Click Mac
3) Click iMac
4) Click Buy
5) Scroll down a bit

I do agree with this. I always thought it seemed like Apple was offering it as an option for those who really, really needed it, but generally didn't want people to get it so hid it away because it might be more expensive for them to make or something. It seems like they're trying to discourage people from finding it. - I never realised there was a link to it on the buy-page either; When I've seen them on Apple's site it's been using the Search field to search for iMac VESA
