Hi, I have a M1 iPad Pro 12.9" on my desk. Under the same condition, most of the time (let's say 75% of the time) it failed to identify me and asked me to enter the password. For example, it fails now and I enter the password to login. Then, I put it back on my desk and pick it up again. It recognizes me and logins automatically. Then, I put it back on my desk and pick it up. It fails to recognize me again. How come? Is there a way to improve its ability to ID me?

Probably because of the angle on your desk.

I got a 13 Mini a few months ago, coming from an SE1 with Touch ID, and I hate Face ID. It hardly ever works when I lay it flat on my work desk.

He says he's picking it up for Face ID though.

Maybe you set it up wrong. Mine works a little too well, it recognizes me when I make sure to hold it at a more straight-on angle.

Oh,okay. The beginning sounds like the OP is picking up the iPad to put in a password after FaceTime failed, then putting it back on the desk, only to next time, have it work sometimes.

My experience, it does a pretty good job at working if I am holding it up towards my face. Just not too well if the iPhone is laying on a flat surface.

Make sure your face isnt too close. When I got my first Face ID iPad it’s was frustrating me no end, with a situation similar to yours. I realised I was always getting to close to it to try to make it work, as close as I would on my phone.

It only fails for me when my hand is in front of the camera (another reason to move the front facing camera to the long side of the iPad

same here.. I have a 13 pro, coming for 6s .. half the time I have to enter the password even if in front of my face. I hate it. Touch ID was so much better.

You're holding it wrong.
Literally. In my case. I had to point the camera straight to my face.

If the iPad is on its keyboard stand, everything works great! The issues however come whenever it is laying around on my desks (like you would position a book or a notebook) or if I am holding it in my bed. I have to be very deliberate so that Face ID would work. It is annoying. Touch ID for me works better and has better success rate. And I do not need to think about it.

Maybe try doing the setup again? I put my iPad on a stand next to me on my desk and it almost never fails to unlock. Same when I'm standing looking at the iPad on a stand on the kitchen counter.

When re-doing the setup again, is it better to do it in a well lid environment or in a little bit dark environment (kind of worst case)?

Probably because of the angle on your desk. This is because they work my observing different aspects of your finger and converting it into code.

When your iPhone's face recognition isn't working, use a soft and dry cloth to wipe the top part of the device to ensure the Face ID sensor is clean. Usually, when you hold the phone on the ear for too long, body oils and dirt may stick to it, causing Face ID to fail or perform poorly.

My wife hates it on her 11" pro, has it turned off, no issues on her iPhone 12 max though.
