After updating to iOS 11 I’ve noticed that all the productivity apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) basically opens a folder stored inside the Files app, why? apperently, I have to create a new Document for the Files app before the app actually opens.

I have my Dropbox and google drive added to Files, but when I open those app it does not take me to Files for browsing my storage. I have to manually do that by open files to do that. It serves me no purpose though, as I cannot even do a proper search. I also don’t understand why I still have to have the apps installed after adding them to Files, it serves a Files no purpose as I’m still opening my documents from the apps.

And can someone tell me why Files turns into dark mode when opening Keynote? We don’t have dark mode on iOS

Everything in pages is stored in iCloud Drive. So when you open pages it goes to iCloud Drive you then scroll to pages open up that folder and your pages docs will be in there. From there you can also create a new doc and from then on when you reopen pages it should open to your currently stored pages files.

See screen recording below.

But I’ve turned iCloud off from Pages, that’s what confuses me

The reason for that is that the window you see is the equivalent of the File Open dialogue box that you see on the Mac. Pages for Mac also opens with a file browser window.

According to Apple in iOS11, this is the way how document-based apps should work. It is Pages that opens, but the first screen it shows is a file browser to either open a recent file or create a new one.

While the idea isn't bad, I do agree that it's confusing because it looks so much like the Files app.

In the past, Pages used to show it own file browser, but this has now been discontinued.

Yeah, I kinda get the picture now, but I still don’t understand why it shows my my recent docx files that I got stored in Dropbox considering I’m inside the Pages app. It should only show me latest pages documents. Yet, it cannot show me my google documents. I’d love for google drive to be integrated the same way, too. But funny how Files cannot do a proper search while spotlight is able to search words inside a document.

I see what you mean. I think it's because Pages can also open Word documents, but not Google docs. And in iOS11 it will show those files regardless from where they are stored.
