Why I cancelled my nMP order

I ordered a nMP minutes after they showed up in the Apple Store on the 19th. But after rethinking my decision, I cancelled the order today even though I really liked the design. The main reasons are I couldn't justify the cost and the lack of an NVIDIA option (I have developed a CUDA-aware application on my 12-core 5,1 with a Tesla GPU in it).

One might ask why you bought one in the first place, given that you work in CUDA.

You need to have the proper tools to do your job and if the nMP does not, it makes sense not to buy it. I agree with the other poster - why did you even order it if it wouldn't do what you needed

I was looking for something more portable so I could do real-time presentations "on the road". After ordering, I did try to convert some of my CUDA to OpenCL but found it ran slower (at least on my NVIDIA hardware). The "mistake" Apple made was giving me too much time (January delivery of a BTO configuration) to rethink my decision to buy. Glad I did since I also found out the nMP only supports Windows 8 under BC. As I fall back, I ordered a refurbished quad-core MBP (with Geforce 650M) from Apple this morning and its going to be delivered tomorrow!!!

Yeah no **** nvidia was bad at opencl, portable nvidia card is enough cuda power for you?
Its about time when they release, thunderbolt pcie to run nvidia cards externally.

You had time to fully process what you did and act accordingly. Congrats on your non-purchase

Congrats on the MBP! Although I'm definitely getting the nMP I couldn't live without my 17" i7 MBP. In addition to being invaluable for demos and presentations, I've found it surprisingly capable for a lot of 3D modeling and animation tasks, Photoshop, and even After Effects stuff. It's nice to be able to get out of the office now and then and still get stuff done. I even press it into service as an extra render node now and then; it's no monster but the few frames it cranks out during a run do help.

Try not to think about how much you could have sold that machine for on eBay if you had received it in January.
