So today I finally got around to installing my USB3 card in my Macpro 5,1. I installed the splitter off the 2nd bay SATA connecter and all that. When I powered it on my MACVIDCARDS hacked ATI 7970 card decided to run its' fan at max. At first I didn't realize it was the video card running it's fan at max and I ended up without anymore ideas as to what was causing my fans to run at max. So I figured what the hell, why not and I called Apple. My system is still under Apple care so why not! I got a tech who was more then willing to help out. Once we (rather I) figured out it was just the video card running its' fan at max he continued to try and help! Seriously Apple! You're helping me trouble shoot a hacked video card! It didn't bother him and he continued to come up with ideas. He escalated to a senior tech for help. Meanwhile, while I was on hold I moved my 7970 to my old Macpro 3,1 to try and figure out if it was the video card or the Macpro. Well, the fans in the ATI card behaved normally in the Macpro 3,1. So I put it back in the Macpro 5,1 and well suddenly it was back to normal. Yet the tech from Apple is still trying to figure out a root cause. I'm like wow, that's support! So ya he totally didn't figure it out but he wanted to and is willing to stick to the problem and figure it out. Mind you by this time we've been on the phone for 2 hours.
In the end, Apple didn't figure out squat. I was coming up with all the ideas of moving the card from 1 Macpro to another. The Apple tech had no clue and was putting me on hold all the time to talk with senior support. However, I must applaud there willingness to try. He even offered to replace my video card! Now that was a tempting thought, replace my MACVIDCARDS ATI HD Radeon 7970 with an official one! But alas I resolved the issue by moving the card and resetting the EFI bios. I'm still left thinking OH MY he almost replaced me hacked card with a real one!
I recently tried to resolve another problem with my wife's Windows 7 pc and Microshit wouldn't even try and help. Yet Apple in my case here wants to go seriously beyond! This is what keeps me as an Apple customer and this is what finally got my wife to dump her Windows laptop and get a Macbook Pro.
