A funny (terrifying?) story...

On the 13th, I immediately pre-ordered a 16gb Wi-Fi. Careful as I am, and as skeptical as I am, I reserved one for in-store pickup at the local Apple Store.

Fast-forward to today...I was elated when I saw the shipping email from Apple this morning. Then, as per usual, my balloon was gloriously popped. I noticed that the billing address matched my current residence, but the shipping address...gasp...was my parents house. I live in Washington, DC. My parents live in Kansas. I nearly smashed my computer in a fury-induced rage. I swiftly called Apple to see if they could re-route the shipment - no dice - UPS doesn't do that. I then realized that I had a contingency plan...my in-store pickup. I checked my email and the website to ensure my reservation was still confirmed and I confirmed with the phone rep that I could easily return the pre-ordered unit and decided that I would simply have to go wait in line with the unwashed masses to collect my iPad on Saturday. This isn't an ideal solution, but better than not taking part in launch day. Of course, now I'll be anxious all week worrying about store supplies, etc.

Feel free to ridicule me, I deserve it.

But I do believe you will have to pay the restocking fee. I think that is 20% of the device's cost.

Seems like everything is gonna be just fine either way.. If anything I admire your skepticism because in light of your shipping/billing address snafu it actually benefitted you in this instance! :)
ouch that sucks. at least you seem to be in good spirits about it all things considered.

This has happened to me - the default mailing address was the last one used. At least you'll be able to return it - or you could be a good son and give it to your parents as a gift. :p

Sell the second one. Stock is constricted so you can get more than you paid, especially overseas.

The notion that someone would ridicule you is silly. Or it should be. And if anyone does - it shows a lack of maturity. Your situation doesn't affect anyone but you. So whether or not you have to wait hours/or even delay in getting one - that's your situation.

According to the phone rep, I can return it within 14 days with NO restocking fee as long as it is unopened. And the restocking fee is 10% according to her.

But I do believe you will have to pay the restocking fee. I think that is 20% of the device's cost.

Nah, you don't deserve ridicule. You were smart to order your iPad both ways. Wish I had done the same

I agree, especially if they are going for more on ebay after the launch, which they probably will be since it seems like supplies are tight and the next batch won't be shipping until April 12. You probably have a window of a week or two that prices for ipad's will be high. Sell it!

Just be sure to cancel the inevitable zero-feedback bidders you'll get. Sigh. People warned me about this (I'm trying to sell my 2g iPhone). Apparently other sellers will create fake accounts and bid your auction up and then not pay. So you can either eat eBay's listing fees or wait two weeks (to go through eBay's non-payment process) before relisting.

Sure enough, I got a zero-feedback winner and he's now giving me the runaround about paying.

I am excited for your parents:D

if your parents miss the delivery , UPS will leave a slip. After that you can reroute the delivery for a few bucks. You can call UPS for that. ive done that for a camera order @ amazon. Shipped it to jersey to save on tax, then re-routed it to ny.

And it was shipped to your parents why?

Old address on my Apple account. This is the first time I've actually ordered something from Apple.com in a very, very long time. I had a power adapter for an old iBook shipped there when I still lived nearby about 5 years ago and haven't had anything shipped to me since; I usually just go to the local store. I didn't notice when I submitted my pre-order. I guess I should consider myself lucky it's going there and not some other old address I lived at.

My parents live in Kansas; I live in Washington, DC. The drive to the Apple store is much shorter. Otherwise, that would be a fine idea :)
