Looking at the major 2013 release phones this year it has pretty much come to my conclusion that the phones are pretty much at there peak for a while,we have come to main stream 4 cores now and pretty much have peaked at lipo tech in the battery segment also.

lets take a look at what Samsung has done, they have nearly doubled its specs and jammed it all into a slightly smaller shell then its older borther the gs3.

This is a great accomplishment but what can Samsung do next for the gs5? we have so much cpu power now that the gs4 will most def be able to run the next 3 versions of android and they can do a die shrink in the next 2 years to get there octo core to clock higher and stay in the same voltage envelope but I feel that they have finally hit a peak and will stay here for about a year or two.

they can shave off a little bit more bezel in the gs5 and shave a little bit from the top and bottom and keep it a 5in screen but I think 5in will be here for a while and the phablets will just get a little bigger.samsung left ony a few options on the table for a gs5 and Im sure people will not get the same WOW factor on the next galaxy cell.I mean we have 2 versions now and one is sporting a exynos soc that on paper is about 15-20% faster yet the snapdragon s4 can do everything the octo can without the end user knowing the difference,so the spec war is basically at its peak now and no one will care when one phone opens an app 1/10s of a second faster.

I can see htc and lg adding micro sd cards back in and going removable batteries but what else can they do either?I think its kinda like computer cpus now and even a cheap I5 chip can make a computer run and feel just as fast as a i7 chip to the end user.

What I would like to see in the next galaxy cell is a 5in screen with just a slightly shorter shell and maybe a carbon fiber front bezel and aluminum around the sides and keep the plastic back cover, but other then that I just don't see the next gs5 or any other flagship android cell wowing anyone after this year.Trust me guys android is also heading to the same position that apple is in but apple has so many areas to improve on while android pretty much all ready threw everything at the wall with the latest flagship phones.

this is the first time that I think I will get a new phone and not need to upgrade it do to hardware limitations and wonder how companies will wow people from this point on

Double post?

no your thread is a joke and nothing but a Samsung hate troll thread.

This is about all phones in general and honestly its going to get a lot harder after the htc one and gs4 to wow new customers over.

I already sold my iphone and using a cheap android cell and waiting to get the gs4 but I think I will not have to upgrade for a while after it,its not like the old days that cells got a lot faster and better with each new phone but now on the performance/os side specs are pretty much at there peak like why the need to get a full 8 cores and use up power when the os and the reg 4 cores are just as fast to do the same tasks

Well you can always upgrade from S4 to their new TizenOS-based phone later this year

even if tizan takes off there is no point, hardware wise I think we have peaked unitl 18-20nm chips are made but even then whats the point of scoring 5k higher in geekbench when the cells are all so powerful that anything you run on them will feel exactly the same

and tizen was a plan b for android, samsung wont leave android for a very long time if ever.if you think tizan launching this year is about as crazy as apple stock hitting 1000 by Monday morning

you are so very wrong. what about flexible displays? what about nokias pureview technology coming to high end smartphones? what about all the new battery technology that is being developed possibly making charging on a daily basis a thing of the past? what about smart watches? what about see through phones?

there is still a lot of innovation until phones become like cars or something with very little innovation.

and you expect all this in this year or next?

and nokia? they are basically at the bottom right now and you think they can compete with Samsung and apple?

the camera in the gs4 is so good that I don't think anyone will want to get a nokia if the camera takes 2% better pictures in a darker sceen.its going to be really hard for next years cells to wow us and just wait till the gs5 comes out,it wont be anything over the top and basically a minor spec bump

Hardware far outpaces the software and it's not going to be a peak in 2013.

IMO smartphones are at a crossroad right now, they are powerful, but not powerful enough to be connected to a monitor and run a desktop environment. And that's where the industry is headed, so until phones easily can run a desktop, the advancement will not stop.

Besides that, there is a fierce competition between Intel, ARM, PowerVR, Nvidia and other players.

Galaxy S V will have a faster CPU(ARM Cortex-A57), hopefully 128GB variant, the GPU will probably be SGX Rogue/6-series, maybe 3GB RAM... etc...

The only thing I hope will peak is the screen size and resolution. I do not want a 4K 6" phone.

IMO, the software is much more important at this point, especially the UI design consistency and smoothness, but the hardware improvement will not stop. Galaxy S V will blow S4 away. S4 introduced new sensors, SV will bring something new too.

Also, don't forget camera phones. Nokia is rumoured to bring WP8 PureView, Sony is rumoured to bring a CyberShot Android phone, etc...

----------

Hardware wise, yes since we cannot really get much faster.

http://www.gsmarena.com/16nm_arm_cortexa57_cpu_ready_to_hit_mass_production-news-5799.php

3x the speed of A15 is much faster.

That's what I'm waiting for, when a phone is powerful enough to replace my desktop and connect to a 4k monitor, run whatever program I want and everything being fast and smooth. People really seem to under estimate how much more powerful a proper computer is than a phone or tablet. The software on these mobile devices are very optimized so they run fast, but pale in comparison to what an Intel computer can do right now.

arm 15 is not even out yet on any phone and you think a57 will be next year? lol you will not see an arm a57 soc until 2015 and is the next generation jump I am talking about from now and until then but even with a57 there is no need for that much power.

the gs4 will be the first chip to use a15 and up till now we have been using 3 year old a9 designs so don't expect people to just jump a15 to a57

a15 was also tapped about about 2 years ago and its finally now coming out in the real world

cant believe i respond to this obvious fanboy drizzle but here goes- please do look at low light comparisons between the galaxy s 4 and the lumia 920 (or the htc one, for that matter) and then tell me there is only a 2 per cent difference in picture quality.

and yes, from a hardware innovation perspective i believe nokia is very much capable of competing with samsung and apple.

to even think phone innovation peaks in 2013 is pretty "interesting", to formulate it nicely.

I don't think you are getting my point.a 2.5 year galaxy s2 with a dual core exynos a9 CPU is on the latest official jellybean os.

The a15 socs when they hit main stream this year with the gs4 will be enough to run any os for at least 3 years.

You do know the gs3 and iPhone 5 and pretty much every single phone sold today is based off of a arm 9 arch.

Getting a slightly better camera in a gs5 vs a gs4 will be a hard incentive to push people to upgrade to it from a gs4 or htc one .

Even the krait 800 snapdragon that is not due till the end of this year is not a full arm a15

There should be a 3D 4+4 core BB10 QWERTY slider with pico projector before talking about peaking.

and you are not getting mine- while i agree that, though processing power is doubling every two generations or so, we dont need it for todays software. however, as has been written by another poster, the phone will one day probably replace all our devices, so processing power still has a long way to go until that is realistic.

however innovation is happening and not slowing down or reaching a peak in 2013, as you put it.

the fact that the general public dosnt know the difference between the snapdragon s4 and the exynos just proves my point.Did you know the snap dragon galaxy s4 is using ddr2 ram and the exynos is using ddr3?

does it matter? nope both phones run exactly the same and people cant make out the difference.

what do you think the gs5 will have in it? Im betting a exynos 5 clocked at 2.0ghz on a 20nm node

2014, Galaxy S V, A57.

Mark it down.

The reason A9 was used because they were increasing cores. Single - Dual - Quad.

Now A15 is already in a quad configuration. They have to go somewhere and the competition is not slowing down.
