I know (and am greatly thankfull) that the Dev Team has always come through before. But it feels different now that:
Apple has started to attack the problem through both firmware and software;
New (3GS) Bootrom;
3.1.3 software closing an exploit that was prviously only "half successfully" utilized (tethered).
The Dev Team was only able to make a "tehered JB" (on 3GS new bootrom), and before they were able to go further, Apple closed even that exploit.
As noted in another thread, the Dev Team are volunteers with day jobs and/or school. Apple has unlimited funds to throw at firmware/software development.
As one who lives by and relies on a JB 3GS, I hope and pray I'm wrong. But the current situation reminds me of Cable Boxes years ago. Hacks & Black Boxes were common. Then came Digital Cable Boxes, and that door has yet to reopen.
