Because of supply chain issues, Apple was not ready the upgrade the screen and did not want to just get by with selling he M1 Pro for another year and did the minimum upgrade just to keep it fresh before a huge upgrade next year.

Adding more dimming zones would be a decent reason to upgrade. M2 is really the least they could do. More power to iPad when it’s op for 4 years already.

Display upgrades usually cost more money. We already saw that with the 12.9 last year. Not really a great year to be pushing higher materials cost given the circumstances.

Well, if my 2018 iPad Pro does suddenly kick the bucket, it's nice knowing that there's a direct replacement sporting the latest chipset available to upgrade to, even if I don't really get any other newer features to go with it.

I will not be buying a new Mac until they upgrade the Mac Mini with a new processor or the iMac with a new processor and a bigger screen. I no longer need a new iPhone or iPad and will continue to use them until they break or are obsolete. I tried an Apple Watch 7 series and sold it after 3 months as I found it to be annoying, intrusive and unnecessary. The thrill is gone for new upgrades and exciting new products simply don't exist any longer.

I spend more time on my iPad that any other Apple device. It is used to conduct my business, order supplies and generally keep up with the news. I use it sometimes 6+ hours a day and after a year, I can tell, the battery is not quite as good.

I have ordered the new M2 12.9 1TB and it will be here this next Wednesday and will trade in my M1 unit. I have no regrets in buying the latest and greatest as it is very important to me.

Myself coming from a 4 year old iPad Pro. It’s a megaton upgrade. The world doesn’t revolve around people with an 11 month old M1 iPad Pro that are upset there isn’t a more significant upgrade. In 3 years maybe you’ll see significant improvements.
This is like a 2021 Honda Civic owner complaining there are supply chain issues and the 2022 Honda Civic isn’t a huge upgrade.

Did you feel that your M1 ran into limitations as a result of the processor being too slow for your use cases?

I don't know whether the Honda is a valid comparison, but this year's iPad Pro is perhaps the most insignificant upgrade in Apple's history. I can't think of any other reason other than supply chain. What is your hypothesis?

Terrible reasoning and grasping at straws to justify it. You could easily get a battery replacement and be done with it. But hey, you are part of the demographic Apple targets for lame reasons to upgrade just to upgrade.

What chip should they have pulled out of thin air? The M2 is currently the fastest Apple Silicon chip they have. There is absolutely no extra performance they could have added to this update. They were not going to make a special M4 just to please the people that want to be wowed with massive performance gains every year.

After the initial raw power excitement of Apple Silicon this is our reality. Incremental updates. Just like we have had for years with computers. 35% GPU performance increase is actually pretty respectable for a device that costs the exact same as the previous model. We just are not going to see double performance gains very much anymore.

Im not even sure what is needed of that extra power. One group of people complains the power is already wasted on a tablet. The other group complains it’s not somehow magically 8x faster a year later. Apple just can’t win.

Look we knew exactly what the M2 was compared to the M1. It’s a solid update to the chip for the same money but it’s not earth shattering faster. That’s not a bad thing considering how good M1 already was. We also knew there was no secret M3 or M4 that would find its way into just the iPad. That makes no logical sense at all if that’s what people expected.

As for the display it’s already one of the best displays on a tablet or computer on the planet. I produce and edit HDR videos and it’s an amazing display. I also have a 14” XDR 14” M1 Pro MBP and I love these displays for color grading HDR. Sure a $40,000 HDR reference monitor may be better but the iPad Pro is also $1,000. There isn’t much room to grow for the display right now without adding more local dimming zones. Thing with dimming zones is the more you add you reduce the blooming but it’s still there. Any extra is welcome but this is where the tech is right now. We would love micro LED or maybe a well implemented OLED but I don’t think it’s there yet for a realistic price.

so realistically there isn’t much room to update the display right now. Plus the display was just updated last year to the XDR. It’s completely normal to reuse a display for a few generations. I expect the MBP XDR displays will last a few generations as well and that’s perfectly fine. 2500 local dimming zones is a ton. A lot of HDR TVs are lucky to have 100 and higher end TVs may have 500 dimming zones. The XDR displays really are in a class of their own already.

This update was never intended for existing M1 iPad Pro users. It was intended for new customers who now get faster performance for the same money as the previous model. I call that a win for those new customers. Apple could have left the M1 as is but new customers wouldn’t get that added performance. This is completely normal. Yeah as a M1 iPad Pro owner it’s a pretty dull update to me as well but that’s entirely the point. I don’t have to feel my M1 is inferior yet. The M1 and M2 are both solid devices and will continue to be for many years. The M1 can not be end of life before the M2 meaning both will be supported for years.

The only problem is people want to be wowed and shocked all the time. We are back to an era where we should likely wait 3-6 years to upgrade. That’s when we will see big performance gains. Just like it’s been with computers for years. I know I will not really have to upgrade my iPad Pro when we get the M4 or maybe even M5. By that point the performance jump should be pretty large and there should be some good tech advantages in other areas.

Looking at the 2021 and 2022 12.9 Pro differences, its quite clear this update was an afterthought. I expect the 2023 update to be a lot better.

ipad pro history is not that big, so its irrelevant at this point.
supply chain for what? a different design? not a chance...only SoC have supply chain issues and we did get a brand new M2 with hardware proRes , pro Raw that makes a huge different for the pro users that buys the ipad pros

Given the cost of a battery replacement vs trading in a still-relatively new iPad for the latest model, he likely isn't saving that much either way.

If the M2 11" got the same XDR display as the 12.9 plus a landscape front camera, that would have been compelling enough for me to upgrade from my 11" M1 Pro. A modest spec bump, nah.
