Has anyone noticed that all the Tomb Raider games made by Eidos have a Macintosh version? Ever since Crystal Dynamics started making Tomb Raider, the only game we've gotten is "Anniversary" (good game btw). We didn't get Legend, or underworld.

It kind of pizzles me off. I have all these fond memories of playing Tomb Raider on Macintosh years ago because the platform had all of them. Now its like the series is split up for us. Its just not fair!

Yeah yeah... I know bootcamp exists. But I for one don't like having Windows on my Mac. It's just not my thing. For how big versions of Windows are as of late I would need a huge chunk of my HD to just install Windows. Then of course the extra space to install games.

Any idea why this is that Crystal Dynamics wouldn't follow in Eidos' lead and have versions of their game for the Macintosh platform? I mean, it has more market share now then it did in 1999. You think it would make even more sense to do it now.

Yeah. I steer clear of Xbox 360. Too many crashes in the past for my liking. I'd go for PS2 and PS3 versions of the games before I picked up a 360 anything.

Its a shame Microsoft bought Rare. If they made a more reliable console then I wouldn't be complaining. I'm not avoiding it because it's microsoft, I'm avoiding it because it's unreliable.

Tombraider Anniversary makes me mad because there's no vsync support at all. I hate tearing.

Email support you never know we might be able to patch it. ;)

Edwin

I've emailed support and they have no plans on adding that feature. They said that they might incorporate that feature if the game ever had to be updated for compatibility with Apple's latest operating system, but the game runs the same in Snow Leopard, so I doubt they'll issue an update.

Modern games *should* have the ability to use vsync. Tearing looks terrible and turns me off from enjoying the game.

None of this would even be a problem if Apple, Nvidia or ATI included a control panel for tweaking the settings for their cards to force OpenGL games to use vsync. This is available in Windows, but not in Mac OS X.

Anyway. Does anyone have any ideas WHY this is the case? Anybody? There really hasn't been one post related to the subject yet...

They didn't port Underworld to the PSP either, which I was looking forward to. The other 2 are present though and mighty fine games they are!
Eidos didn't do a good job with the games though. Each game was worse than the previous, at least with CD they're all rated the same.

But why wasn't it ported... I'd imagine it's down to licensing problems. Or maybe no studio stepped up to port it to OSX, maybe sales of previous games were bad enough to not warrant development? Tomb Raider games are a very niche market compared to the other recent OSX ports (Modern Warfare, Bioshock etc).

I'm only an observer, not a player, my wife and her father are though, and the original Tomb Raider games for the Mac were ports of the Eidos games done by Aspyr. My guess as to why there aren't any ports of the newer games is that Aspyr is no longer holding the license to port them.

Hmm. Sorry for being pushy. Thanks! The last two posts basically answered my question.

I happened to enjoy all the TR games but I do agree Legend was quite a bit better than Chronicles was.

So basically TR just doesn't have enough sales to really bother porting it to Mac OS?

I have noticed. The PC gets all these games like Time Shift (decent game) that gets terrible reviews (or not great ones) they never bother porting to Mac OS. Its almost like the GOOD games get ported to Mac OS and the ones that aren't great get left on Windows/Xbox.

I just wish the porting over was quicker.

Got it in one on the games selection if the game is a blockbuster it has more chance of a Mac version than a game that is just OK. And yes I wish the porting was quicker too would make my job so much easier :)

@edddeduck : Please make Feral port Tomb Raider Underworld just to make Kristenn and I happy ;)

I wish you could port it too in a matter of weeks :(

Oh yay! Seriously. I won't get my hopes up but its nice that someone actually noted it. I wish Tomb Raider Legend would have been ported. I feel asking for it now might be silly. 2006 after all. And if it will be 50 dollars I don't know if anyone would buy it :(

Yeah I wish it were for you too edwin! you sound so cool ^^

Feel free to add me to the list of buyers :), if controlling Lara will be more like in the earlier game. I tried the demo of Anniversary for Mac and absolutely couldn't make out how to control her in any precice way.

I am a big fan of TR games and have played the games TR3, TR Last Revealation, TR Chronicles, a lot of custom levels and also some parts of TR6. One reason to play these was the very precise control of Lara which was absolutely gone in Anniversary.

So please get us a Mac version of Underworld, but "fix" the controls.

BTW Kristeen, as far as I know Eidos still is (and always was) the Publisher of the Tomb Raider games. However, the company doing the development is Crystal Dynamics now. They took over this job from the company Core Design, who created the "original" Tomb Raider games for Eidos. The "original" TR games (1-5) had all been ported to the Mac by Aspyr Interactive as a publisher while most of the technical work was done by Westlake Interactive, while at least TR6 was ported by (as far as I can remember) a company called Beenox but still published by Aspyr.

Crystal Dynamics were the ones doing the Kain games aren't they? The first couple of Legacy of Kain games are kickass, too bad they drove the series into the ground.

Put me down as wanted an OS X port of Tomb Raider Underworld. I'd even be interested in TR Legend as a Feral Legends Title even though I already bought and played the PC version on Crossover Games - it was a good game and worth a replay with all the bells and whistles turned on.

Resurrecting this thread to let you know TR Underdworld is coming to the Mac at the end of the Month. :)
Hopefully, this one will have Vsync (I hate tearing too. It completely ruins TR anniversary, IMO).

Mac TR Underworld has VSYNC

Mac TR Anniversary will have VSync when in the next patch (no estimated date on this patch just that when it comes it will come with VSync).

Thanks edwin for listening to us and porting this game. I hope that it will run fine, because you know how much I hate when ports differ so much with the Windows version, specially for TRU, since it runs almost 60fps constantly in 1080p on Windows on old PCs now.

Depends on the hardware but anything with a modern card will run it on max settings. The HD3000 and the other under powered cards like the 320M might have to turn the odd thing off but compared to modern AAA games it is less strenuous on the GPU.

We have support for pads, normal Mac/PC pads get the usual 1 2 3 prompts for the in game prompts but if you use a 360 or PS3 pad you will get custom prompts for that pad just like you would on the console versions.

The supported pad list is a good 40+ devices and if you have a strange pad then let us know and we can get it added without needing a patch using the gamepad plugin system we use in our games.
