Certainly the contrast and brightness of the xdr display must be substantially better than the liquid retina display of the 11” but there are a couple of reasons why I think the current one is better (at least for me):
1. I don’t really watch movies on the iPad, I use it mostly for reading and from what I understand, it mainly shines when playing hdr content.
2. It will most likely cost $100 more than the current one
3. Blooming artefacts, especially When displaying text in dark mode
4. Apparently uses pwm (even if it is with a high refresh) vs. no pwm in the current model

just my 2 cents

That's why I just bought a 2021 11" 256/Cell iPad Pro. I don't want that screen. I don't watch media. I draw, sculpt, and read. Wasn't happy with the mini-led issues.

The 11” screen is great, but the mini-LED is fantastic. Hard to go back once you’ve used it.

Honestly, other than 4K HDR movies, I don't see a difference between the two in every day use. The outpit is still 500-600 nits for both, and only kicks into high (1000-1500 nits) when HDR content is playing. Which is not most of the time.

There is definitely a difference even in non HDR content. I compared my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 to my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 and since the blacks are truly black on the 2021 variant, the image is just more pleasing and has more contrast in non-hdr content which makes it pop more.

The most important aspect of a laptop, smartphone or tablet is the display. Because that is what you will be looking at 100% of the time.

If it wasn’t for the XDR from their $6000 display, I probably would not have gotten the M1 12.9 iPad Pro.

The M1 display is the first mobile display which rivals my LG CX OLED TV in image quality. It’s that good.

It’s the blacks. I’m a sucker for black actually being black as opposed to dark washed out grey.

Have u actually used it in a dark room? The blooming on the 12.9 is pretty bad for anything other than watching movies.

this is related to mini led itself and not the iPad of course

Having a 12.9” M1 now after having used the 2018 11” for 3 years, it’s hard for me to notice a big difference outside of HDR content. While HDR content does look amazing on the M1 12.9”, I don’t feel a difference when I’m really doing anything else, including watching non-HDR content. To me it seems to be an area of subjectivity, much like how some people really notice the jelly scrolling on an iPad mini 6 (and for the record I was bothered by the jelly scrolling on my mini 6). It’s actually making me question whether I want to switch from the 12.9” to the 11” since I have the previous magic keyboard for the 11” anyway, and I can either pocket the extra cash or use it to upgrade to 16 GB RAM. Still have 2 days in my return window to decide!

I am very annoyed by blooming. I detest all mini-LED displays… love my 11” because it doesn’t have that display. Definitely looking forward to micro-LED…

I'm more and more convinced, the bloom is actually exacerbated because it's added in to make it look better for LCD screens. (1) the bloom always seem to be more square than circle (2) i see bloom on my OLED display watching appletv shows.

It’s like a layer of grey smog has been removed from the display. Quite noticeable compared to my now gone 2018 iPP and still here mini 5. It enhances much more than just HDR video playback.

I'm holding out for mini-LED, micro-LED, OLED or whatever. It's very hard to justify spending all that money right now when it's just a matter of time until the 11" gets a better display.

Until that 11" refresh happens, my 10.5" IPP is still more than good enough in the mean time.

The bloom is a small price to pay for the incredible HDR on offer.
For regular day usage as a browser, the 12.9 M1 screen seems slightly better than my 2018 11” but not by much.

But 20% of my usage is for late night video playback in bed and it makes everything else (except maybe the super pricey XDR monitors ) look generations old while playing HDR.
It looks much better than even the likes of LG CX because the peaks are just incredible.

And while the LG CX does not have any blooming, its something you would notice only during credits (typically)
On the other hand, the 1000 nit peaks vs near 0 blacks combined with the shorter viewing distance makes the TV look much less punchy in comparison for everything else but the credits.

Unless OLEDs improve their peak brights, my next TV is going to be a mini LED for sure
