Why I'm SOLD on the iPhone

I was quite content with my Cingular 8525 until I found the Nokia N800 Internet tablet last weekend.

The Nokia tablet ($400) is such a fun addition to the 8525's Internet functionality, but doesn't reliably connect to the Internet!! Then, despite Missing Sync, I had to use a PC to upgrade my Windows Mobile software, and wiped out all of my contacts accidentally.

There are work-arounds, shareware programs, etc., but I am so tired of that. I simply want a Apple phone that works with my...Apple computer.

I don't care anymore about the lack of 3G. I care about the ability to

1. Sync with my Mac with a mobile Apple OS (not a glitchy Windows hack/shareware work-around)

2. Play music stored on my iPod/phone if I want, or connect to Rhapsody and stream music from ONE unit. (with the Nokia N800, it's stream or grab the iPod and play pre-saved music)

3. Increase connectivity stability. EDGE is slow, bu it connects. If I am in a wi-fi area, I'll opt for that connection. Either way, conectivity should not be a problem. (with the Nokia N800 Internet tablet, connectivity is a MAJOR problem).

4. Hopefully access Flash and other web data as its intended to be seen. No web-enabled phone to date has lived up to this...not even the Linux based N800. It's Flash 7, so you can watch vids on You Tube with a wacky frame rate or convert them (hassle). I hope the mobile version of Mac OSX truly displays content as it's meant to be displayed/played: text and multimedia.

5. Get e-mails that look as they should, not as attachments that you have to re-sync to obtain and open elsewhere.

I love my 3G. I love the ability to talk on my Cingular (HTC) 8525 while surfing the web, getting an e-mail or text message. BUT, the points above outweigh that.

The only problem NOW is that like everyone else, I may have to "camp out" or miss out.:)
 
All good things. But how would the Rhapsody streaming work? I wouldn't be so sure about that--although anything's possible for the future.

Via an Internet connection. I use it on the Nokia N800, but then again, I don't recall whether I installed a Rhapsody app for the Nokia. I may have. If that's the case, you have a point :)

I'm still sold on the iPhone though. I can probably find some streaming radio site that works with it.
 
I'm pretty sold too. The only problems for me are the lack of a removable battery, brand new OS (this is also one of the best parts of the iphone), and the demand for a new two year contract.

I could most likely live with every one of those issues, I want an iphone pretty badly, but first I have to graduate from this last year of college so I can move back to Baltimore where AT&T service is decent.
 
I'm certainly sold on the iPhone too! However, I won't be getting myself in debt to get one as my current handset (Samsung U600) is wonderful.

So for me, it depends on price.

So ricgnzlzcr,

We can't even buy the phone if we are not getting a brand new contract? When I bought my current phone from Cingular, I just paid the outright price for it because I was not within an upgrade period. I sure would not want to stand in line and not be able to purchase it.

As far as we know right now, you can only get an iPhone with a new, two-year contract. You might be able to add two years to your current contract and get an iPhone that way, but you most likely won't be able to buy it and keep your current contract as-is.

Yes, it sucks, but that's what both Apple and AT&T have said so far. Rumors abound about unlocked iPhones, pay-as-you-go iPhones, yada yada, but the above is the only thing we've officially heard.

It's cool. I renewed relatively recently, so I wouldn't mind a new 2-year. But I would want to know for sure beforehand. That would be sooo humiliating to get to the front only to be told that I don't qualify for whatever reason.

Thanks for your info. If they have to do not only sales but also new contract deals, the lines will probably be nutty. I hope they have people working the line to answer questions and maybe start the sign-up process.
 
They'll put off telling us about the plans and their terms as long as they can, but I doubt that we'll find out the morning of the 29th. As soon as there's some PR about it, they'll train AT&T employees and you should be able to ask before the 29th if you will qualify.
 
I'm sold too.

My cow-orker (a huge Mac fanboy) teases me (the staunch linux monkey) over my admiration of the iphone. While I'm not afraid to like my iphone, I'm afraid to become infected with mac-itis. ;)
