The answer is simple - learn the correct way to use it! Have a look at the photos in this thread... :)

I believe they turn out grainy because there is no stabilization built into the camera software/hardware like my sony camera has. I've only been able to get real good pictures when I'm holding the iPhone really still. I like how the new camera has auto-focus which will help alot. The one thing that bugs me is that they can put in a new camera but can't get one that has zoom?! My 4 year old samsung had zoom. Whenever i need to take pictures of a blackboard for class I have to walk up close to it to make it legible. It would also save from having to download that crappy .99 zoom app.

WOW! how did they get those pics? they look realllly good. can't believe its from the iphone camera...is it an app?
They are good aren't they!

I've checked the EXIF data on a lot of 'em and they are straight off the camera. There's no reason why anyone shouldn't get a good pic off a 2MB camera. It's just a case of knowing its limitations - i.e. only use in good lighting and hold the 'phone STILL when taking a pic (don't wave it about like a flag like so many people do!!). Grainy pictures are the result of under exposure - taking pics in poor light.

well at the end of the day

I bought the Iphone for it's convenience as a cell phone and internet etc. I had a Canon 40D DSLR and now a Canon G10 since I wanted to go simpler then the DSLR but these I bought for the cameras capabilities not the Iphone that camera is just handy. though a little zoom capability would be nice even if digital. but look at the size of the case the 3G lens does a good job the 3GS should do better both are fine IMO

the ericsson w580i really apples too cantaloupe lol it has a tad bit more room for the camera etc, also it's partly what's important too you. being able to slide a phone in your pocket and have it barley noticed or a tad bit more size. my G10 is pretty small so I can take my Iphone and the G10 both lol.

The iPhone camera is very sensitive to light conditions and the distance to the object. But it can also clear pictures like this one:
