Why is the upgrade for the MacBook to Toshiba 200 GB hard drive a $400 upgrade option when I can buy that same hard drive for only $155 off of Newegg.com?

'Cause HD and RAM upgrades from Apple are notoriously rip-off-y?

Besides, you can upgrade the MacBook hard drive yourself. Why are we even having this discussion?

If you get the BlackBook it's not. Instead it is only a $200 upgrade. On the other hand, you could purchase the HD separately from Newegg and perform the upgrade yourself.

My question is why would anyone choose an upgrade through Apple then? If they know that they can get it cheaper, why would Apple offer the upgrade option then?

Because most people don't know and it's an easy way for Apple to make more money. For those who DO know, they save money.

Because not everyone likes to upgrade their computers, they are afraid of the inside of them. I'm not one of them but there are plenty who don't want to look inside them fearing the glare might burn a hole in it.

Anothe reason is on the Mini they give you 2 256mb chips, instead of one 512, so it's better to get 2 512s when upgrade to 1 gig with Apple, which is still bs, but at least selling or trading off a 512 to upgrade a slot is easier then a 256mb
