I have a MBA bought July 2011 . It has the Dual Core 1.6GHz Intel chip.( 4GB Ram )
I have just updated to Mountain Lion.
On the same network I have an ATV 2 .
Although the icon for mirroring has appeared on the menu bar I cannot select the ATV 2 on the network in order to mirror my MBA
I can airplay mirror my Iphone 4S and my Ipad 2 both running 5.1.1. The ATV has 4.4.4 .
On the MBA using Itunes, I can select the ATV and play songs thru it but when I select displays in the Sys Prefs, the option to select mirroring devices is greyed out with 'no devices detected'.
All devices connect wirelessly.
Is my MBA unsupported ? How to determine if this is the case ?
Thx,

You need an ATV 3 for mirroring. Boom!

No you don't .

Please read my link.the op needs to update his Apple TV software.

AirPlay Mirroring
Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:

iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

Are you sure about that ?
I am fairly certain that the ATV2 is supported.
I rather feel that the post about updating the ATV2 to the latest firmware is the solution .
Now , I'm trying to figure out how to do to that.

Looks like you are correct. My guess is outdated software as well then.

What kind of jb is it ? Is it fire core ? If it is you should be able to update the Apple TV and not lose the jb or apps .

Yeah it is the Firecore and I have just gone into maintenance and updated.
Got another monitor now to select on the MBA but still the MBA still cannot 'see' the ATV2.

You need to update the Apple TV software not using the maintainence menu from fire core .

Use the apple settings menu

Also you need to have home sharing on and the Apple TV needs to be on the same network as the MBA .

After you update make sure the Apple TV version is 5.01 or above and it's connected to the network.

It will work. You just need to make sure it's set up properly.

I'm a bit confused here.
Do I need to do this using the ATV remote ?
If I go to the Settings | Update Software | it says software is up to date.
Checking in about it shows ver 4.4.4.
Or do you mean I need to ssh into the ATV ?
And use some menu from the MBA ?
Thx for your help .

----------

Reading about this update 5.0.xx it seems that the menu ( as you say ) on the ATV2 should show an available update from my current one ( 4.4.4 ) but , for some reason , the update doesn't show up .
hmmmm.... is this going to be a manual download and ssh or ??

I used seas0pass to JB and update to 5.2.x and now the airplay mirroring works fine.
One word of caution. When entering DFU mode, you need to temporarily use the power cable to enter DFU mode BEFORE attaching the micro usb cable.
Then the thing works fine.
