I just came across this article, and by my calculations its only 300PM in the east, and I dont understand, why apple would start selling in the am at some of their eastern stores, while others will have to wait until 600PM

Perhaps AP is just confused about when they go sale, and decided to make up the fact that they are already on sale.

That story doesn't mean what you think it means...but there is one sentence that's so unclearly written that it's not your fault.

The sentence that reads:

Eager New Yorkers, some of whom camped out overnight, were lined up at one Apple store which offered the first iPhones for sale Friday morning to be among the first consumers to get hold of one of the pocket-sized gadgets.

Should read something like this:

Eager New Yorkers, some of whom camped out overnight, were lined up Friday morning at one Apple store which offered the first iPhones for sale, so that they would be among the first consumers to get hold of one of the pocket-sized gadgets.
