Why is Apple RAM so frikkin expensive ??

A 1Gb stick of RAM for the 24" iMac costs ..... £90 ..... Crucial do it for only £30 .....

A 2Gb stick of RAM for the 24" iMac costs ..... £315 !! WTF !!

Crucial does the same stick for just £80 !! WTF !!

Just go with third party RAM.

Be careful when choosing third party ram. The cheaper it is, there's an increased likelyhood that you'll run into problems. Quality ram is usually the way to go...

Agree completely. You can get that quality without buying from Apple, obviously. Run a search and you will find lots of threads on this subject. I bought both Mac Pro and MacBook Pro ram from Crucial, saved a bundle, and have had zero issues.

Yes, Crucial is the way to go if you want new memory! I've had pleasant experiences with their RAM in the past. Great that you brought that up.

OK, so they are Apple therefore they can !!

They obviously do the same thing with their hard drive upgrade prices ..... but with RAM being so easily bought and fitted from other companies ..... surely Apple are losing a huge stream of revenue by charging so much more ??

If they added only an extra 10-20% more on to the market price then many people would still buy from Apple and they could still generate a fantastic profit from the upgrade ..... however with such a massive price gouge, most people will just buy from somewhere else .....

No sarcasm intended. I highly recommend Crucial memory. I actually ordered two sets of 2 GB for two macs in my house. I couldn't be happier. Three years, no problems and still running smooth.

I just bought an extra gig of memory for my 24" imac. it's made by Micron which is suppose to be the same memory that comes stock in these machines.

I think the total price for the memory was like $56 shipped. not too bad I guess.

Mushkin also makes "Apple" ram which is the same price as their regular ram of the same module. Only difference is the SKU as far as I can tell. To be on the safe side, installed the "Apple" type, 2x2GB. Have had it in for about 4 months, no problems.
