Why is the store down?
Are we gonna be able to buy/order new ipad or apple tv today or is it just putting up new advertising for the new iPad?

I've never understood why Apple has to take the online store down for hours when they announce something new - no other online shops have such high levels of down time when adding new products - in fact most don't go down at all.

I think it's really just to add to the hype.

Because bringing the store down is one of their best sources of Internet chatter.

Imagine a few million visitors refreshing the page every few minutes to see if they can order yet, all while Apple is trying to update the web site.

They take it down so they can update, test the site and order processes before going live without unnecessary hassle.

They take it down so they can update, test the site and order processes before going live without unnecessary hassle.

And also because they don't want the website to be the announcement. There's a reason they build the suspense for the actual product introduction and it's simpler to keep the world at bay while the event is happening.
