I just got a new TV and want to rent a HD movie however all the films I pick say play trailer and they are all SD.

I want to see a HD trailer before I rent one, is that possible?

You probably need to go to the settings menu and enable HD. It's an option but the default is supposed to be HD as far as I'm aware.

This is a 160GB Apple TV - Couldn't find the setting but its outputting 1080p in the settings and on the theatrical trailers I can watch HD trailers but in all other sections it just says play trailer and its always SD. I'm guessing this is an Apple decision

regarding previews in HD

I think what apple does with the previews is once the movie is available for rent all the previews show in SD definition ,you could only see the trailers for the new movies coming up in HD ,once its available for rent i think the only available preview for the movie is in SD ,although the movie will be in HD if you buy ,or rent the HD version .

All the trailers are in SD for HD rental and purchase movies. This saves bandwidth and storage space for Apple which is not insignificant considering they offer a free trailer for everything. The trailer is simply a means for you to determine if you want to see the movie or not and is offered as a courtesy by Apple. Considering most other services don't offer trailers I'm happy to see them in whatever resolution is provided.

The only HD trailers I'm aware of that Apple provides are the ones for new movies in theatre now or coming soon to theatres. Cheers!

James
