I have just started to have a go at using Azureus but am baffled by it. It is easy to use etc... But why is it so slow!? I have broadband and I am getting speeds on it at like 2.1 kb/s. What gives?

Torrents are peer to peer, as in, you're only going to be downloading as much as someone else with the same torrent is uploading.

Edit: expanding a bit...raising your upload speed sometimes helps, because that's how the bittorrent protocol works. however, it doesn't necessarily work in that way if you're the only leecher (the only person that hasn't completed).

Not to say torrents suck, you're just prolly getting the wrong ones ;)
I max out my connection all the time while downloading (3mbps).

Chances are your ISP is limiting your bandwidth.

Change the port used in the Azureus options (making sure its available in your firewall) and check the encryption feature so that the ISP isnt aware it is torrents you are downloading.

ISP's are usually throttling the ports, so not using the default 6881-6889 for bittorrent might help, but it's doubtful. More likely that there's no generous leechers/seeders on the torrent. Encryption is dependent iirc on tracker and torrent/torrent client support.

I disagree from experience, its usually down to the ISP. I had the same problem as the thread starter (and I presume as hes in the Isle Of Man he has BT pipes) last week getting 1 or 2kbs, but as soon as I sorted out the ports and checked the encryption box in Azureus (as they suggest on their web site), my speeds picked up dramatically with the same number of seeds/leechers/

well, i live halfway across the world, wouldn't have any experience with BT or any of the other european ISPs O:)

oh, check the NAT connectivity, it takes longer to connect to peers if you dont have it set up with your router, etc. if you have one.

It is so slow because it is a terribly crappy program, just like LimeWire.

Azareus and LW are both Java programs that were ported to the Mac, and one thing is that JAVA is extremely slow, and two, it is even worse on the Mac.

The biggest tip I can give you is to use Transmission for Torrents and Aquisition for P2P stuff, cause even if you max your RAM out on your machine the program is still going to totally suck.

Azureus is a wonderful program

I routinely get over 200Kbs download and it took just 4 days for a 5.15GB file to download. And it isn't slow on my powermac with 2GB of RAM only takes up about 100MB

you know what's crappier? the mass majority of bittorrent clients for mac being banned/not recommended on major torrent sites because of irregularities and just general outdatedness.

Plus there's the fact that transmission may be a unibin, but azureus is still the king of torrent applications for mac and particularly for intel macs, as no client comes even close to the features az has. (dont say bits on wheels, cause that app is about half a year old and is missing a lot of new features, and is banned from one of my favorite sites..)

Also java apps are convenient for me in that they're cross-platform compatible. No headaches, for the most part.
Can't say the same to utorrent for windows or transmission/tomato/bow for mac ;)

oh hells yes..i download dvd (cough..linux) installers in a matter of a couple of hours :D

I think there is two issues here. Slow download speeds of torrents, and a slow application full stop. Azureus being Java is a bit of a hog, but it doesnt make any difference to the download speeds.

Honestly, I could care less about cross-compatible programs.

And what is a UniBin? Since I don't know (or just haven't heard the term) I figure it's not too important.

universal binary.

also, the cross-platform compatibility was more towards java in general. it's making my life easier cause the same apps i write on my Mac work in Windows and in Linux.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but i'm not having much luck with the Azureus support team.

I'm sure this is a common problem, but i think i have a NAT problem too.. as my smiley faces never go green  and download speeds are ordinary.

My modem is a Netgear DG632. Does this thing have UPnP functionality? I have absolutely no idea about ports etc. and need help!

Which port number should i use? Everytime i try a NAT test it comes up with error..

Any help would be much appreciated!

It's slow and a resource hog, but it's the best torrent client I've used on the 3 platforms I use. It's easy enough for a noob, and feature rich (Ballmer!) for the pro user.

Yes, it would be nice to slim it down a bit and make it less hungry, but isn't that what the new intel chips are for? :-D

I could not agree more with janey re: AZ - and this discussion has taken place several times on this forum since the advent of the intel Mac.

Properly configured and blowing out 5.5/MBps, while uploading at similiar speeds (on FIOS), I'm sucking 2.6% CPU.

Not certain where GimmeSlack is coming from. Transmission is horrible - at least on intel machines.

As for specific d/l speeds, of course it is up to the seeders - AZ allows you to check the baseline rate the torrent swarm is seeding. If you are lacking, tweak your settings.

And your port settings depend on the site in question...
