I've been playing around with DND on iOS 12, and am finding the whole thing very confusing.

1. If I select bedtime in DND, do I also need to select it in the clock app? If so, why is this in 2 places?
2. Options for "Silence" - Always or While iPhone is locked. Description, Incoming calls and notifications will be silenced while the iphone is locked. However, below, I can select to allow calls from, Everyone, No one or Favourites. Which takes priority?
3. Does the repeated calls override both of the above?

It seems to me like this section hasn't really been thought out? Or am I missing the point of it completely?

The last two things have been there like that since before iOS 12. Those call options override the default settings.

Ok. So if I set number 2 to no one, but number 3 enabled, will repeated calls still get through?
Yes. The option for who to let through is who to let through immediately on the first call. If you enable repeat calls, anyone can get through by calling twice.

Regarding bedtime... I’m not 100% but I think it’s like this:

In the settings for Do Not Disturb, the Bedtime option is to say that your DND schedule is actually your bed time, and it lets iOS treat it as such by dimming the display etc. It’s optional because some people may schedule their DND for reasons other than bedtime.

In the settings for Clock/Bedtime, it’s the inverse. The DND option is to say that your bedtimes should be considered a DND period. And this enables the special DND+Bedtime combo. It’s optional because some people want to be fully contactable during their bedtime.

It seems like two ways to do the same thing, but they cover it from both angles because not everyone uses both or has the same ’typical’ patterns for bedtime and DND.

Bedtime is an extra layer on DND which keeps the screen dimmed and hides all notifications unless you specifically swipe up to see them

Yes, that’s what I meant by “dimming the display etc.” and when I later referred to a “special DND+Bedtime combo.”

Were you correcting me or just adding more details for OP?

I think you might be misunderstanding me.

You can achieve the two-layer DND+Bedtime in two ways:

This adds Bedtime to DND:

And this adds DND to Bedtime:

But yes, they’re not the same thing in that they both have a good reason to exist separately, but they are the same in the sense that the mode they both produce is the same. Is that right?

If you want DND to track your actual bedtime (as defined by your Clock app), then switch it on there and switch off the Schedule toggle in the Settings app. This is useful if you change your bedtime schedule during the week and want your DND schedule in sync with it.

If you don't want DND's schedule to be tied to your Clock app's schedule but still want the dimming effects of Bedtime mode, then toggle it off in the Clock app and toggle on Bedtime in the Settings app.

It's definitely not straightforward!

(I wish the sleep analysis wasn’t tied to Bedtime alarms. I have no need for an alarm.)

Great post! I've just set this up. This enabled you to have a bedtime DND and a 'during work hours' DND with your phone on all other times.
