Maybe I'm unique here, but I have a set of 2nd gen Airpods and BOTH of the originals have now failed. The behavior was this - when the failing/failed airpod was selected as the mic (either automatically or manually, when I was troubleshooting), the volume level of the mic was very low for about 5 seconds, before going higher. This made hey siri not work at all, and sound quality when dictating was terrible too - I'd hit the dictate button then clear my throat repeatedly until I saw the sound waves actually start to flow, then I could talk. Totally not functional. So Apple agreed to replace.

About 2 months ago I got the first replacement device. Getting it to sync up with the other, good pod, was a challenge. It took a long chat with Apple. I think that in the end, the new airpod had to update its firmware to be current, with the other one, before I could get them to sync. Now, I have my second replacement, and I have the same problem. Since there is no way to get the firmware to update manually, you simply.... wait. And hope, and wonder.

Apple's instructions, included with the new airpod, are ridiculous. 2 pictograms. First, put both airpods in a case that is plugged into power. Second, hold the button on the case making the light flash. Since it's black and white, one cannot tell if it is referring to a blinking white/amber or what, but that's what I gather. But when both airpods are in the case and the button is pressed, only a blinking amber light appears, and no syncing is possible.

So, I wait. And hopefully tomorrow, I will be able to sync them.

I am an IT pro. This is pathetic. If this isn't any easier for ME, how is anyone in the world with "average" skills supposed to figure it out? What's wrong apple? One, single, 1.5 inch square black and white instruction sheet?!? Cmon...

In a van down by the river
I agree with you about the poor instructions and execution of the update process. It is poorly explained and implemented. A user should be able to manually check for and initiate manual updating on the AirPods.

It took me several tries (about 1.5 hrs) before I was able to get my AirPod Pros updated with the last software available.

And would you look at that - after 12 hours of waiting with the airpod in the case, I just went to open it and finally I have the green light, allowing me to hold the button and reset the pair, and pair them with my iPhone as a set. So annoying...

Would it be so hard for Apple to update firmware before they send these things out? I know it's some work and some cost, but the customers pay a LARGE premium for these things compared to other bluetooth headphones, which aren't THAT inferior. That requires a premium support experience.
