I tried to buy a macbook pro 2.2Ghz this weekend (glossy screen) and every apple store and mac store was out of stock in both the seattle and portland areas.

When I called apple direct, the sales guy there said that they are filling pre-orders first and are behind on stocking the stores. The Mac Store told me that apple has changed the mbp 2.2 Ghz to pre-order only, and will no longer be stocking it in store.

Typically when apple starts to reduce their production its because they are planning to do an update.

Is the Macbook Pro line coming for an update? Any thoughts? I know the buyers guide says no, and I know that there has been little rumors, except for the ultra portable coming out. I wonder if apple will be adding flash to all their computers? And thats what the update is going to be? (when they update the iMac, mac mini, and ultra portable)

It makes sense that leopard will be incorporating flash memory, much like vista can use a flash usb stick to help speed up the OS. And I know that Steve would not sell leopard to have capabilities that his computing line already can't deliver.

My only other thought of why I can't buy in stores and only pre-order online (with 7-10 days to ship) here is that the Steve feels that Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz is priced too low, such that apple (with the educational discounts applied) isn't making a large enough profit margin, and is therefore doing this to encourage people to buy the MBP 2.4Ghz.

Any thoughts here? I'm ready to buy right now.

the 2.2 mbp you described is not experiencing shortages because of an upcoming update. Has it occured to you that they may simply be in extremely high demand? The shortages of LED displays doesnt help either. Good luck on finding one though.

Because they are just so fricken awesome!! :D

I'm telling you, these are well worth the wait (12 business days for mine)
yeah I've been waiting...12 days officially for mine.

Just order one, try to forget about it and you will be happy when you get it.

Because its THE value play in the lineup. And Bare Feats tests show
very little difference in the 2 graphics chips (128 vs 256).

MUCH NICER than Macbooks for only around $400 (once you buy
extra 1 gig memory for the MB to make ram equal).

Three Reasons:

1) Value of the 2.2 compared to the 2.4, like many said. $500 cheaper than the 2.4 yet very little differences.

2) Short supply of the LCD screens (keep in mind only 15" MBP has them).

3) Its the school season; students/parents are gearing up for the new school year, especially with the case of college students. I can't tell you how many people are in stores because of the college shopping lists.

I ordered my 15" 2.2Ghz w/ glossy screen on July 18th b/c all 3 of the Dallas stores have been sold out for over 4 weeks. The wait is definitely NOT fun, but I'm hoping it will be worth it when it finally arrives...

Ouch you guys have it harsh, I literally waited one day, then again I didn't order outright but only got mine about ten days ago :)

hmm.. walked into an Apple Store 4 days ago in Southern California and got one. Had a choice of matte or glossy. No 2.4 matte in stock though.

I got my CTO 2.2 with 160GB HD in 10 biz days. The thing shipped on Friday and FedEx flew it halfway around the world over the weekend. Got to me this morning. So these things appear to be shipping within Apple's estimates.

There were matte 2.2s available in the Atlanta area Perimeter Mall Apple Store last week. Stock seems to vary across the country.

Good luck.
