hdmi 1.3 and intel hd3000 should both handle 2560x1600 without a problem? is this so they can sell TB? Did anybody try maybe dell U3011 with new mini's hdmi yet?

The mini sports a v1.4 hdmi socket!

then what prevents the mini from handling 2560x1600 using the hdmi port? OSX restriction?

Isn't the max res of HDMI 1920 x 1200? I know HDMI = DVI + Audio, and you need a DVI + USB Video adapter to get any higher resolutions...

Technically HDMI 1.4 can carry a larger resolution than 1920 x 1200 but are there any monitors/televisions that can handle HDMI resolutions higher?

from wiki, for 24-bit and 30-bit color hdmi 1.3 has max resolution of 2560x1600 at 75Hz, hdmi 1.4 supports 4096x2160 at 24Hz

for 36-bit color hdmi 1.3 drops to 1920x1200 at 75Hz, hdmi 1.4 drops to 1920x1200 with 48-bit color.

is osx's color depth anything beyond 32-bit?

Maybe I'm missing something, but if you want to use the dell U3011, why not just use a DisplayPort cable (miniDP to DP)?

the new mini does not have displayport anymore, replaced by thunderbolt, plus hdmi supports audio too

if it does not work with hdmi why not just use a thunderbold to mini diplay port , thats what thunderbold is made for its supposed to work with mini display port devices and the U3011 has a mini display port

^Since the connector is the same you could even just use a mini-DP to DP cable. MiniDP plugged into the thunderbolt port and DP end plugged into the monitor.

From wiki:
Thunderbolt can be added to existing products with relative ease. Thunderbolt driver chips fold the data from these two sources together, and split them back apart again for consumption within the devices. This makes the system backward compatible with existing DisplayPort hardware upstream of the driver.

good to know, thanks. no audio though, right?

HDMI 1.3 ???!!! That means no 3D video! You need HDMI 1.4 for 3D or else it reduces quality.

3D video needs to die. Its an useless gimmick that reduces image-quality by itself. The sooner we purge the world of this moronic crap, the better off we will be.

Not sure. Reading the wiki page it looks like TB is essentially DP + PCI Express.

DisplayPort itself supports audio, so maybe depends on the monitor. And even then I don't think I see monitors too often that have speakers built in? Looks like the U3011 can pass audio through one of the audio output jacks?

Apple's MDP outputs have supported audio since the 2010 models or so, so the new mini should have it on the TB port too...but it's a question of whether the display supports audio through DP. Adapters could play a factor too, like some DP-HDMI ones don't handle the audio, but I'm not sure it'd matter for a MDP-DP adapter/cable.
