Hullo so yeah, I'm new and ignorant but I need answers and I'm tired of my IT guy's lame excuses. I have a nice new G4 Powerbook with OSX running on it and because there seems to be no alternative to Word I have to use it. The thing is it's so slow and just doesn't work right. I have problems with Quark as well and basically the whole thing feels very unstable. Any advice?

Why is MS Word so slow?

Because it's a crappy program?

Go to www.openoffice.org . They offer a free office suite, and the OSX version is in final beta right now. It should be pretty stable.

That's what I use on linux, and it is a GREAT office suite, I must say. I have yet to find anything that isn't compatible with MS office (although I don't prepare presentations at all, so I have experience there).

If you are running quark, you must be running classic because there is no OS X version yet. If you run the classic environment, you also need a lot of RAM. I bet you have either an 867 MHz 15" Power Book or a 1GHz 15". The 867Mhz comes only with 256mb of Ram; that's enough to run OSX, but not enough if you are going to Run Quark under classic and Word at the same time. What version of Word are you using?
If this is the case, more RAM will definitely improve your experience.
