Well I've finally figured out why my late 2015 iMac may be giving me the beach ball/stall treatment since I installed Catalina. I looked at memory use, and sure enough Music is the culprit. I'm only running Safari, Mail, and iMessage along with Music. I do have a secondary screen attached. God help me if I want to run a photo app.

Does anyone know how to tame Music? I do have a large library. Am I just going to have to strip the four 8GB out of my iMac and invest another $400-$500 dollars in an older machine?

Solution is very simple - do not install software with memory leaks...otherwise no amount of memory would be enough. Seriously, Catalina is far from ready to be used by general public. Maybe instead of purchasing extra memory consider going back to stable OS and try Catalina again in a few months. Thats currently the best advice you can get.

I just checked my Catalina install - music CPU usage 3% 272 MB out of 16g - Music 1.0.1.22

Something does not seem right? maybe it is updating Artwork and perhaps updating other music / items online? music from apple ?

If so it should calm down after finishing the updates?

Right now Music is using 690.9MB, earlier it was GB use. I don't remember the value. I guess I'll keep monitoring it. Heck it has been years since I've use the Activity Monitor app. Thanks for the help!

The Siren song, of a new OS, has driven me upon the rocks once again! ;) I was at least wise enough not to update my wife's iMac. So at least I avoided that catastrophe!

All kidding aside it looks like the only safe way with Apple OS is to wait several months into a new one. But, every update seems to be a bit of Russian roulette for the end user.

I did a clean install, then load 30GB of music and the Music App started to chocked for 5 to 10 minutes then, after that, everything was smooth and normal. The only thing I have not figured out is how to transfer files to my iPhone with file sharing, I don't see the "+" symbol to search for the files from the music app... there must be a setting or something to click, if anybody knows how to do that , let me know.

I think this is the same as it was on Mojave / iTunes ? except it is done in the finder?

I use the "Playlists" sync to transfer - see screen shot

I don't have any problem transferring music to the stock iPhone app, what I want to do is transfer some mp3 to the app VLC on my iPhone using the Files menu option that is shown on your screenshot. I solved it using wifi transfer.
