I'm trying to back-up my iTunes library to DVD but my G5 iMac (Superdrive) is constantly rejecting them.

I insert the disc, the drive whirs for about five seconds and then the disc is ejected.

I've tried about five different DVD-R disc's with no success. I've also tried a CD-R and CD+RW and both have worked fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Andrew.

It sounds like your drive may be going bad. I guess keep trying different kinds of media to be sure it isn't the media itself. Sounds like you're going to need a replacement though.

I have some DVD+R media and burned several a few months ago. Recently, I've not been able to burn any blanks from that same spindle. The iMac eventually just ejects the disk. I tried 4-5 of them with no luck. That media was probably close to a year and a half old. I went out and bought some new DVD-R and it has no problem accessing those. Is there something analogous to a "shelf life" with DVD media?

Yep, on both of my imacs the burner started to get pickier and pickier before they just stopped being able to recognize anything. Sorry.

That happened to me when I had my eMac original combo drive.

At first was the media but then was the RW CD's that I erased and try to use again. But when I installed the tiger things were back to normal.

Did you try the PRAM boot? People told that works. I can't guarantee.

Shut off the comp start the comp and right away press command+option+R+P. Hear the strat up sound twice hen release. Then let the comp load and try the DVD's again.

This happened to me with my iMac that I have the first day I got it :( Apple took it back and I had a second drive go bad as well but they replaced the drive this time and not the iMac. The tech. said a batch of drives had been bad but in your case it may just be old and time for a new drive.
Good luck with it as I hope you have AppleCare or can do it yourself. The cost for Apple to do it is about $390 with labor and the drive as per my bill (AppleCare paid for).

Progress - emergency over!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Today I , ahem, 'borrowed' a JVC DVD-RW from work and it's worked fine. I'll be buying box of the JVC's tomorrow.

(The DVD-R's that didn't work must have been a dodgy batch.)
