Why is my MBP so slow in Vista?

I have a 17" MBP, 2GB, 2.33GHz model. Anytime I want to boot to Vista (Home Premium) via bootcamp it takes around 20 minutes to start up! I have installed Leopard not too long ago and that only takes around 1 minute to boot up so I don't think it is a hardware problem.

In fact I've tried restarting the computer and booting up Vista a second time to see if it takes any less time to start up...when I do that and time it, it takes 17 minutes! I know this is not normal. Also I don't have anything significant software on my Vista partition just Office and some other small applications so it is not bloated with software. When it finally finishes booting up the speed of the computer is acceptable (though sometimes it gets confused and doesn't respond to my commands) but it gets really, really hot.

Does anybody else experience something like this?

Experience it anytime I deal with Vista which was the biggest reason I switched.

Honestly you can't really be serious when comparing Vista and Leopard in regards to boot speeds or for that matter speed period? Apples and Oranges here man! Vista has more overhead.

Now, unsure what your actual specifics are, MBP's actually run Vista quite fast compared to most other laptops (reference the PC World article on "Fastest Vista Machine is a MacBook Pro") so it has to be something with whatever is being called at startup. Check roaming profile, start up variables, anything else that's supposed to run when you start.

Check the registry as well, lots of goodies that can be deleted there.

Thanks for your feedback. Now my vista partition refuses to boot at at all! I am going to install XP instead as that never gave me problems and booted promptly.

Vista is Bill Gates attempt to look like OSX. I think back and remember the keynote speech when Steve Jobs showed the longhorn bull on the screen and it had "Home on the Range" playing and the bull was just... well.. just standing there. ROFL funny stuff.

I won't defend Vista becuase it sucks my MBP battery dry in minutes... but it certainly doesn't take 20 minutes to boot up. Something is wrong somewhere...

And to tell you the truth, I kind of like Vista on my MBP, as long as it's plugged in.

If Apple can come up with a framework and set of software tools anywhere nears as good as Visual Studio and .Net, I'll switch

Yes Vista isn't worth installing IMHO. I have XP running in Parallels on my 2.33 macbook pro with 3gb RAM and that seems to be the better way if you need access to a Windows machine. It boots and runs certain apps faster than it does with my PC high spec desktop with 4GB of RAM running VISTA Ultimate.

should log the boot. something is hanging it up cuz 20 minutes is way too long. One good thing I can say about Vista, it usually starts pretty fast.

I'm a .net programmer and I'm a convert. I'm sick of dealing with Windows on my personal level. I use it at work because that's what makes me money.

Look into REAL Basic. It's cross platform/cross architecture Visual Basic type language. Although I personally think VB sucks balls and C# is better and if there was something similar like REAL C#Sharp then I'd go for it in a heart beat.

But not having the architecture didn't keep me from switching. I prefer not to use Vista, to bloated, to buggy, huge memory hog. XP or nothing.

Just a quick windows tip if you are loading it for bootcamp and it is slow:

Type in "msconfig" into the run menu

Click the startup tab

Uncheck anything you don't need - you can google any process and it will tell you what it is... you'd be surprised how little of that crap you need, most of the time you just need "ctfmon" and "itunes helper" (to get your ipod to work in itunes but I think it works even without this)

Voila! - Now windows is fast again (assuming you don't have any viruses....)

Thanks for info. I had edited the startup items under msconfig before removing vista and it still took ages to load. I don't know what was the issue. I'm glad to have gone back to XP now.

There had to be something very very wrong with your installation for it to take that long to boot. My Vista install takes the same amount of time, if not less to boot then XP. Vista SP1 is coming out soon and is supposed to fix all the problems, you should give it another try then. Vista is by no means perfect (lots of useless software included, takes up way to much RAM breaks tons of apps), but that are plenty of problems with OSX as well (i.e. - No maximize window button, no ability to cut and paste files like in Windows with keyboard shortcuts, only copy and paste, crap graphics API, the list goes on). I have actually used both on full time machines unlike alot of fanboys on this forum who are convinced Apple can do no wrong. Although I still would agree that at this time, Leopard is a MUCH better os then Vista.

I wouldn't be suprised if those of you saying "Vista sucks" know what you're talking about, and are just going based off of various anti-MS blogs. Fanboys, gotta love em.

Fud122, it sounds like something got messed up. Has it always been like this? If it has been, then I would just try re-installing again.

I'm running Vista Business on my 15" 2.4 Ghz MBP, and Vista runs just as fast as XP did when I had it loaded on it for a few months. As I said, it sounds like something is misconfigured. I would just backup and start over if I was in your shoes.

It seems like log issue on Vista, Vista was boot up in about seconds on my MBP and installed many games, never got same issue like that.

Just back up all of your data and apps then remove the Vista via bootcamp and re-format the HDD on partition for Vista and re-install Vista, see if works.

Also, You need keeping update on Vista too.

Bootcamp is bloatware-free except for MS programs, unlike other PC companies.

I used to own ASUS G1 with loads of bloatware and RAM clock was shot up to 50% or over on 2GB after start up but on MBP, RAM clock is 25% on 2GB RAM after start up.

Earlier version of Windows XP is buggy in some part, also I was remember about my old HP with 2001 version of XP, contains no service packs until MS released some update, couple of service packs and noticed about much improved in XP than 2001 version. I think it's similar to Vista, it will getting better in later time.

Reason that I pick Vista because of Halo 2 and few windows games are exclusive to Vista, if MS will release new directx 10 for XP and patches to get work on XP then I would pick XP over Vista, oh well.

MS did made big mess with their job, that's unfair about MS did ported directx 9 to Windows 98, ME and 2000.
