Hi,

I was wondering, is there any way, did I miss something on the issue of converting old photos to heif?
It would be so cool if apple would offer to automatically transcode our old iCloud photo library into heif and HEVC content.
It would save so much memory.. both these new formats are amazing!!

I agree! I love the new formats in terms of storage, and supposedly the color quality is a touch better as well.

However, on the device, pre-existing content is not converted automatically to HEIF/VC upon updating, nor is there a way to within the Photos app. New photos taken ARE converted, provided you have high efficiency capture turned on in your Camera settings.

Converting an already compressed image would further degrade the image quality. That’s probably why existing images aren’t converted. These are lossy image compression techniques.
Right, that makes sense. Though it would be nice if they would offer it :)
