it seems like quicktime software has changed for screen recordings, when l go to file, new screen recording, my cursor just changes to a camera icon, not allowing me to select audio from drop down menu next to the red record button as is still there for 'new audio recordings' (which work fine). l went to system preferences, sound and tried both sunflower and internal speakers to get audio but still no audio for screen recordings, just a muted screen recording. please help me resolve as got critical seminars to record with audio.
l am on Catalina 15.10.7

thanks so much

When I use Quicktime Player for that I have to have the macOS Sound out set to "Soundflower (2ch)" and the Quicktime Player screen recording's Microphone setting to "Soundflower (2ch)".

I have also, in Audio MIDI Setup, created a Multi-Output Device with both my regular sound out and Soundflower (2ch) checked so that I can both record the sound in Quicktime Player and hear it through my regular sound out device.

@Appletise – QuickTime Screen Recording does not and never did support recording the Mac's audio out-of-the-box.
You could set your Mac's sound output to speakers and the screen recording input to the Mac's microphone – but the result certainly have reduced quality.

However, to get a high-quality audio recording of what's happening on your Mac, the solution in recent years has been to install a third-party extension called Soundflower. For new versions of macOS it has been replaced by a new tool by same dev(?) called BlackHole. Basically it will allow you to route audio from one app (or even multiple) to other apps. This will give you another audio input option in QuickTime's Screen Recording settings.

l did set sound output to speakers and know the quality will definitely be reduced. but there is no sound, only audio recording records the sound.
l have soundflower installed years ago. only recently had to record screen shot but noticed there is no sound when it is selected. importantly we use to be able to adjust for Quicktime Player screen recording's Microphone setting to "Soundflower (2ch) but it seems we cant do that anymore. suggestions?
maybe l unistall the soundlower that l installed years ago and download Blackhole?

thanks all

@Appletise – I remember there were some issue in newer macOS releases with the Soundflower audio drivers.
Using BlackHole as a replacement I was able to do some gameplay screen recordings (incl. the game's music!) on Catalina.
It was important to follow the "route system audio" setup guide from their website: https://existential.audio/blackhole/support/

It's just a few steps using Apple's Audio MIDI Setup utility. Maybe you even manage to get to work Soundflower this way. But BlackHole seems to be the future.
