Why is "Submit CD Track Names" greyed out in iTunes 5? And how does one activate it?

Just got iTunes 5 and for the first time purchased a bona fide CD that didn't find any matches on the gracenote CDDB. (not too surprised, as it's from a pretty small band...) So I added all the info myself, but when I click the "Advanced" tab in iTunes 5, the "Submit CD track names" is grey - so I can't click on it.

I've tried highlighting the whole album, just one song, etc, without any luck. I've searched through apple's help files and a few forums without any luck.

So, how does one enable the "Submit CD Track Names?"

Did you have the CD in the drive and selected when you did this? I tested it, and the option is not greyed out so long as the CD is inserted and selected on the right.

This makes sense, as there's no good way iTunes can gather whatever identifier it uses for the CDDB without the physical CD present, unless it stores that tag in the ripped file's metadata somewhere.

If you did have the CD in, and selected, I have no idea what's up.

Actually, no, I was just trying to submit the information from my hard drive, as I bought the CD in the states, and I'm now back in Dublin working. (That's the whole reason for iTunes and all, not having to lug my 300 CD's around...)

This makes sense, as there's no good way iTunes can gather whatever identifier it uses for the CDDB without the physical CD present, unless it stores that tag in the ripped file's metadata somewhere.

Since iTunes can retrieve the CDDB information without the CD in the drive, I figured that it would be able to send it as well, since the metadata would be the same. Generally I always get the CDDB track info after the songs have been imported, since there's no high speed connection back home states-side, so I just select all the new imports and click "get CD track info" when I find myself someplace with a good internet connection.

This is the first time I've tried to submit info, so it's a bummer if I can't submit it without the cd, since I won't be home with it again for months. Plus, I conned a few friends into buying the disc as well, telling them to just wait a week or two until I add the info to CDDB. Well, hopefully someone will beat me to it!

Seems to me like it's a fact, you have to add data with the physical CD. If anyone has experience otherwise, do pipe up!

Maybe you could contact a friend (or the band) and have them upload the info from the states.

Seem like for you it would be no big deal. Are your friends that also bought the CD here in the states?

If you really want to add the track names to the CDDB, just make a disc image of those tracks, mount the disc image, and open up iTunes. iTunes should recognise it as a normal CD and allow you to submit the track names. Just make sure that you use the Audio CD function in Toast (or whatever burning application you usually use) and rather than clicking Burn, choose Save As Disc Image. iTunes should remember the track names from the last time you imported the CD and you should be able to submit them.

Alternatively you could make a playlist of that particular album in iTunes and burn the playlist to a CD. Then you can put that physical CD in and submit the track names.

Either way it'll probably take you 10 minutes or so.
