Why is the last button on a dress shirt horizontal?

On some of my button down dress shirts, the final button is horizontally mounted instead of vertical.

Is there a reason for this?

From what I know, some people say it is due to the pattern of the shirt or to ensure that the button stays buttoned, but there is no real reason for it.

I assume you refer to the button hole, not the button itself.

Perhaps the pull from side-to-side down at the waist is better counteracted my a button hole in that direction?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I think that I know this one.

It's so that when your shirt is tucked in and you sit down the shirt tails will be able to slide just a little bit to the sides. If that's not why then at least it sounds good.

Yep. That way you have matching spares in case you loose a button.
