hi so I notice on iPad and iPhone if I go to settings general iPhone/iPad storage I see a list of apps on each device but each app on each device is giving a different storage total. Any idea why.

Data that is stored for the app can differ since the total isn't just for the app that's installed but also the data related to it that changes as you use the app.
 
ah right I see so its not purely the install amount its a variety of things giving that total
 
App install sizes can afaik also vary from device to device (e.g. smaller screen devices having lower res assets).
 
Yes, it’s called app slicing (I think) and it was introduced couple years ago. Basically, it allows developers to choose which assets are used on which device. Previously you had a “fat” copy of the apps which contained everything, but their size became noticeable with all those iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. So know, if the app is written properly, you only get graphics designed and optimized for particular device. On iPad it’s gonna take up more space, because of sheer number of pixels needed.
