iPod why is the only view option available LIST MODE when playing ipod in itunes?

Is that normal? I'm using iTunes 9 and have a new ipod classic, but even my ipod video did this....is that normal? Will grid and coverflow mode only work in itunes using the files from the library and not what is on the ipod itself?
