Notifications aren't UI events. Notifications are meant to report that something changed but they aren't usually related to UI changes. Usually swipes are detected by gesture recognizers, which have a direct connection to the view that's been swiped.

Thanks again for your insights! I knew that UIGestureRecognizer was used but I wondered why.
