Wondering why people think Apple didn’t give the ability to mount an iPhone with CarPlay running. Android auto can do this and it seems it would be easy and not require a separate touchscreen. Just mount the phone, and run the app.

I don’t really understand what you are asking. CarPlay just displays apps that are on our iPhone on a car screen. You can just run the app you want if car doesn’t have CarPlay

Similar to this. Android auto running on the device itself without the need for a compatible head unit.

Because it's not the functionality Apple intended.

Ok, then what did they intend? If they are committed to safety, which is how they pitch CarPlay. Wouldn’t this be a good option so you don’t have to buy a new car or head unit just to get it?

It’s probably down to money, but it’s disappointing nonetheless.

The purpose of CarPlay is to integrate apps on the iPhone with the car's native hardware (steering wheel buttons, infotainment display, speakers, etc.).
If you're willing to stick your phone to the dashboard and to use it directly, without any car integration, then why do you need CarPlay? You can simply open any app you need and use it normally. Not to mention that you'll get the full functionality of the phone, without being limited to just a few select apps and to just a fraction of their standard features.

Well, judging by the Android example above, it gives an easier/safer interface to use while driving. But Apple would probably consider it an inferior user experience compared to fully fledged CarPlay.
